Odyssey Charter School’s Advanced Learner Support C.O.M.P.A.S.S. Program
Odyssey Charter School is dedicated to supporting all advanced learners through our COMPASS program. Designed for gifted and advanced students, COMPASS enhances their unique educational journeys. This extension program, offered during Voyager Time, provides students with 30 minutes of project-based learning opportunities, four days a week, alongside peers in their grade level. The program emphasizes collaboration, opportunities, mastery, personalization, academic excellence, support, and success.
Collaboration: We value collaboration among students, educators, and families. Students will connect with their peers in a safe and positive classroom environment, sharing ideas and working together.
Opportunities: We believe in challenging every child’s development. Identified students will have various opportunities to explore their potential, engage in meaningful experiences, and pursue their interests through enrichment programs and specialized projects.
Mastery: We will help students excel in different areas. We identify students with exceptional abilities in intellectual capacity, language arts, mathematics, and creative or productive thinking. * By providing a rigorous curriculum that encourages critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and real-world applications, we empower students to achieve mastery of their strengths.
Personalization: We understand that every student is unique. We tailor instruction, provide individualized support, and set personalized academic goals for each student to enhance their growth and help them become independent learners.
Academic Excellence: We challenge identified students with an engaging curriculum that stimulates their curiosity, fosters critical thinking, and promotes deep learning. Through rigorous standards, we strive to help students reach their fullest potential and excel in various subjects.
Support: We provide comprehensive support to meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of identified students. Our COMPASS Program Coordinator will offer targeted support and guidance during Voyager Time and will collaborate with teachers to create inclusive and supportive learning environments in every classroom.
Success: We aim to empower identified students to achieve personal and academic success by nurturing their talents, fostering a love for learning, and instilling a growth mindset.
In addition to providing two hours of extension activities each week, we actively engage students in creating personalized learning goals within their homerooms. This collaborative approach, involving students, parents, and educators, fosters the development of lifelong independent learners. Through goal setting and the application of critical thinking skills acquired in our COMPASS program, we strive to nurture each student’s potential and academic growth.
To qualify for COMPASS, students need to meet criteria in two or more of the following areas: scoring well above average in reading Acadience testing, scoring well above average in math Acadience testing, receiving a teacher recommendation, receiving a parent recommendation, receiving a student recommendation, or having prior involvement in the program.*
* We will not officially diagnose giftedness within our Gifted Program. Instead, the identification process will be based on comprehensive surveys administered to teachers, parents, and students, along with careful examination of testing data. This method allows us to gather valuable information and insights necessary for the identification of students with exceptional abilities in various domains. By utilizing a combination of surveys and testing data, we ensure a fair and reliable process that aligns with best practices in gifted education.
